Kozawa Tomofusa (shite), who lives by Mt. Moriyama in Ōmi Province (Shiga), was once a retainer of Yasuda Tomoharu of Shinano Province (Nagano), but his lord was killed by Mochizuki Akinaga. Now Tomofusa keeps an inn called Kabutoya, and his wife (tsure) has gone on the run in order to hide their son Hanawaka (kokata) from Mochizuki and his cronies. One day, mother and child stop into Tomofusa’s inn. Tomofusa reveals his true identity, and the three rejoice at their reunion. Just then, Mochizuki Akinaka (waki) and a retainer (ai) come in and request lodging. Hearing his name, Tomofusa realizes that the guest is the very man who killed his lord, and he alerts his wife and son. The three arrange a feast, and Tomoharu’s wife and son disguise themselves as entertainers. Complying with Mochizuki’s request, Tomoharu dances a Lion Dance, and when Mochizuki is plied with dance and drink, Tomoharu and Hanawaka take their revenge.
