4 Synopsis
The monk Genpin (waki) lives at the foot of Mt. Miwa in Yamato Province (Nara), and a strange woman (maeshite) has been bringing him an offering of holy water every day. One day, when she comes with her water offering as always, she asks Genpin to give her his garment. Genpin happily gives her his cloak and asks her who she is. She replies that she lives in the village of Miwa, then tells Genpin to visit her in her house, which will be the one with a cedar tree by the gate. Suddenly, she disappears. A villager (ai) comes to tell Genpin that he saw his cloak hanging from a cedar tree, so Genpin goes to the tree. When Genpin comes upon his cloak, Ōmononushi (nochishite), the God of Mt. Miwa, appears, tells the legend of Mt. Miwa, one of the oldest shrines in Japan, and dances a kagura.
