4 Synopsis

A courtier (waki) in service to the Emperor visits the Ise Grand Shrine (Mie) with his subordinates (wakitsure). There, they meet two men, one young (tsure) and one old (maeshite). The old man tells the story behind the name of the river, Mimosuso-gawa, how the maiden Yamatohime rinsed (susogu) the stained hem (mo) of her garment there. The old man goes on about the divine powers of the Ise Grand Shrine, then reveals that he is the God Okidama, and the two mysterious men vanish. Hearing the history of the river again from a local man (ai), the courtiers decide to stay overnight at the Ise Grand Shrine. Sure enough, Okidama (nochishite) appears and performs a dance.
