4 Synopsis

One day, the Lotus-school patriarch Nichiren (waki) is reciting the Lotus Sutra at Mt. Minobu in Kai Province (Yamanashi). A woman (shite) who lives at the foot of the mountain keeps coming to hear his recitations, never missing a day. Impressed, Nichiren asks the woman who she is. She explains that she is dead already and does not belong to this world, but she wants to attain nirvana by learning the teachings of the Lotus. Nichiren chants the sutra for her, and she performs a dance of thanks as she attains nirvana and disappears.
