A man (waki) from the capital is staying at Muro-no-tsu in Harima Province (Hyōgo), and he promises to marry a woman there. After returning to the capital, he dispatches a messenger to bring the woman back, but she is gone, and no one at Muro-no-tsu knows where she went. The man decides to visit the Kamo Shrine on the day of the late-summer purification ritual and pray to see her again. On his arrival there, a villager (ai) informs him that there is a mad homeless woman there, and he decides to have a look. The homeless woman (shite) appears, and the man asks her to perform a dance for him. Watching her dance, the man realizes that she is the woman he once promised to marry at Muro-no-tsu. The two are happily reunited and go home together.
