4 Synopsis

A courtier (waki) and his companions (wakitsure) are on pilgrimage to Hirota Shrine in Nishinomiya (Hyōgo) when they arrive at Kureha Village in Settsu Province (Osaka). There, they encounter two female weavers named Kurehatori (maeshite) and Ayahatori (tsure), who say that, in the past, they worked as weavers for Emperor Ōjin. They say they have come to bless the current imperial reign, and they will return that night to offer their weaving; then, they vanish. The courtier asks a villager (ai) to tell him more about Kurehatori and Ayahatori. When night falls, Kurehatori (nochishite) appears, praises the imperial reign and the weaver’s trade, then performs a dance.
