The shogunal regent Hōjō Tokiyori (waki) is on a pilgrimage through the provinces of the West, and he stops in a village called Ashiya (Hyōgo). As the sun is setting, Tokiyori asks for lodging at a saltmaker’s hut. There, he learns from the youth Tsukiwaka (kokata) and his servant (wakitsure) that Tsukiwaka’s uncle Tōei usurped the boy’s land and property, which have since fallen into ruin. Hearing that Tōei is on an outing, Tokiyori goes to find him. Tōei (shite) and his servant (ai) are joined by a man named Naruo (tsure) and his servant (ai), and they all are singing and dancing while their people starve. Seeing this, Tokiyori, through Naruo’s servant, encourages Tōei to dance more, which Tōei does while also playing a drum. Finally, Tokiyori reveals that he is the ruler of the entire country, then orders Tōei to return his lands to Tsukiwaka, their rightful owner.<br />
