Fujiwara no Toshiie (waki) and his retainers (wakitsure) are on a pilgrimage to the Kasuga Grand Shrine. After worshiping they climb the peak of Saoyama, where they meet some local women (maeshite, tsure) hanging clothing out to dry. The women praise the Spring scenery, then tell a story of Princess Sao, the Goddess of Spring, and the God of Kasuga. Suddenly, the women disappear. A local man (ai) comes to tell the story of Saoyama and the Kasuga Grand Shrine. That night, Princess Sao appears in the moonlight, performs a dance, and blesses the realm.<br />
