In ancient China, a man (waki) who lives at Hefu Bay goes out to watch the fishermen. He buys an unusual fish from one of the fishermen (ai) and lets it go back into the sea out of mercy. That night, the man is visited at his home by a young boy (maeshite) who says he is a merman, the spirit of the fish, and thanks the man for saving his life. The boy tells the man that he would like to reward him with jewels made from his own tears and leads the man back to Hefu Bay, where he disappears. After some time, the merman (nochishite) reveals himself on the sea amidst whirling waves and presents the man with jewels which grant health and longevity.<br />
