A man (waki) returns to Kyoto from the eastern provinces for the first time in three years. He goes to the Kamo Festival and encounters a mad (i.e. homeless) woman (shite), who turns out to be his wife. Not recognizing her, he urges her to perform a dance as an offering to the god. She performs a song and dance telling of her days searching for her husband and yearning to see him. At last, they each recognize each other, but in order to avoid making a scene, they leave separately and hurry off to reunite at their old home.<br />
