In ancient China, a courtier (ai) under Emperor Xuanzong of Tang praises the imperial reign and announces that today there will be a banquet to celebrate the New Year. Emperor Xuanzong (shite) appears with his chief minister (waki) and other court ministers (wakitsure). At the palace pond, a crane (kokata) and a tortoise (kokata) come to perform their annual dance, blessing the realm and promising to grant the Emperor long life. At the happy scene, the Emperor jumps up and joins in the dance.
