4 Synopsis
On his way to Ise Shrine (Mie , Ise) a travelling monk (waki) meets an old fisherman by the shore at Akogi (Tsu, present-day Mie ). The old man explains that the name of this place derives from a man called Akogi who was once killed for fishing in this bay, which had been prohibited, and suddenly he disappears. When the monk offers prayers for Akogi, the fisherman’s ghost (nochishite) appears. The spirit reenacts his illicit fishing at the bay and shows the torments he is now suffering in hell. Akogi then asks the priest to pray for his soul and dissolves in the waves.
